The Atomic Bomb Dome is one of the landmarks that has been kept from the atom bomb that was dropped on Hiroshima. Following the bombing, there was debate about whether this building should be kept but as some of the other remains started to disappear, the decision was kept to keep this and preserve it.
Over time, there have been several restoration projects to strengthen the building and it acts as a solemn reminder of the bombing. It is thought the building only survived due to it being almost directly under the bomb when it hit.
